Days after an unidentified woman’s body was found hanging from a tree in a neighborhood on the city’s west side, authorities confirmed her identity as 29-year-old Tasia Fortune. According to the Jackson Police Department, officers were called to the 500 block of Road of Remembrance at approximately 9:05 p.m. on Monday, August 3, after neighbors discovered the body of an unidentified Black woman behind a vacant home. Residents contacted authorities after making the shocking discovery, though officials have not said how long the body had been there before it was found.

The location immediately became an active death investigation.

Crime scene investigators secured the area while detectives began gathering evidence in an effort to determine what had happened in the hours—or possibly days—before the woman’s body was discovered. “The family also wants others to know that justice will be served,” Avolio wrote, adding that they continue to rely on their faith while coping with the tragedy.

Within days, hundreds of people had contributed to the fundraiser, helping the family move closer to covering funeral expenses.

The response reflected how deeply Tasia’s death had affected those who knew her.

But outside her family, the case quickly attracted broader public attention because of the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing Reed’s family, questioned the official findings and sought an independent autopsy.

On the very same day Reed’s body was discovered, another body was found hanging from a tree in Vicksburg.

That victim was Cory Zukatis.

False information rapidly spread online connecting the two cases, with some incorrectly claiming Zukatis was also Black.

Authorities later determined that Zukatis, a homeless white man, had also died by suicide.

Those earlier cases have inevitably drawn comparisons to Tasia Fortune’s death, although investigators have emphasized that there is currently no public evidence linking the incidents.

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has also become involved.
