We also extend our earnest prayers for a full recovery for the injured detention officer and responding personnel.

Rest in Peace, Officer Da’Quarius Burton. Your dedication, service, and positive influence will never be forgotten.

At only 27, he was building a career dedicated to serving others. His position as a juvenile detention officer reflected a commitment to working with children and helping them navigate difficult moments in their lives. According to those remembering him, his kindness and dedication stood out to the people who knew him professionally.

His colleagues remembered him for his kindness, devotion, and commitment to helping children.

That is the legacy his loved ones and coworkers will carry forward.

It is especially heartbreaking to think about the young people who may have encountered Burton during his work. A kind word, a moment of patience, or simply having someone treat them with respect can make a lasting difference in the life of a child. Sometimes, the people who influence others most are not those who seek recognition, but those who quietly show up every day and do their jobs with compassion.

Burton was still so young himself.

At 27, there should have been many more opportunities ahead of him. There should have been more birthdays to celebrate, more professional milestones to achieve, more family memories to create, and more ordinary days to enjoy. He should have had the chance to continue growing in his career and discovering everything the future held for him.

Instead, the people who knew him are now left remembering a life that ended far too soon.

The tragedy also serves as a painful reminder that behind every first responder, public servant, or detention officer is a human being with a family and a life outside the workplace. These individuals leave home to fulfill their responsibilities, often without knowing what the day will bring. Their families trust that they will return safely, and their coworkers depend on them as part of a team.

When that familiar presence suddenly disappears, the impact reaches far beyond the workplace.

For the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office community, losing a young colleague in such devastating circumstances is a profound blow. Those who shared responsibilities with Burton must now cope with the absence of someone they knew, worked beside, and considered part of their professional family.

The loss of another juvenile detention officer in the same crash makes the situation even more painful. A colleague who once stood alongside Burton is now fighting through serious injuries, while others are left praying for recovery and trying to process what happened.

There are no perfect words for moments like these.

Sometimes, all that can be offered is compassion, support, and the reminder that the families affected are not alone in their grief.

As the community remembers those who died, it is important not to overlook the three other names alongside Burton’s. Latasha N. Dodson, Eddie L. Dodson, and Tamenshia R. Ford deserve to be remembered as individuals whose lives mattered just as deeply. They were more than victims of a tragic collision. They were loved ones whose absence will be felt by people who shared their lives.

Their families deserve the same prayers, sympathy, and support.

The survivors also deserve continued encouragement as they face the physical and emotional challenges that may follow such a devastating experience.

For now, those who cared about the victims must find a way to move forward while holding onto the memories that remain. There will be difficult days, moments when the loss feels especially overwhelming, and reminders of the people who should still be here.

But the kindness Burton showed, the work he dedicated himself to, and the lives touched by all four victims will not simply disappear.

Da’Quarius M. Burton was only 27 years old. He had chosen a path of service, devoted himself to helping children, and earned the respect of colleagues who remember his character and commitment.

His life was tragically short, but his service mattered.

Rest in peace, Officer Da’Quarius M. Burton. May Latasha N. Dodson, Eddie L. Dodson, and Tamenshia R. Ford also rest peacefully.

May their families find strength during this unimaginable time, and may the two survivors receive the care and support they need.

Four lives lost. Countless hearts broken. And a community left wishing this heartbreaking tragedy had never happened.

🕊️ Gone too soon, but never forgotten. ❤️
